Congratulations!
Ashley Redix, Graduate Research Assistant for The Black Cultural Programming Committee, on being selected as a 2015 NCORE Student Scholar. Each year the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE) recognizes student scholars for their commitment to diversity, improved campus racial and ethnic relations, and the creation of an inclusive campus. This year Ashley was selected as one of the 2015 NCORE Student Scholars. Along with this honor, Ashley was granted the opportunity to attend this year’s conference in Washington D.C. While at the conference, she was able to engage in meaningful conversation and dialogue about racial identity development, microagressions and self-care, methods for using data to tell the stories of underrepresented students, and cultivating places on campus that embrace diversity. Ashley’s experience at NCORE 2015 was irreplaceable and assisted in her professional development as an advocate for underrepresented students. She highly encourages all students and professionals to take advantage of this poignant experience!

The Village Celebrates Jakayia Fain!
The Inky and Allison Johnson Foundation has awarded the  2015 Overcoming Adversity Scholarship to Jakayia (“Kay Kay”) Fain, graduating senior at  Fulton High School in Knoxville, TN.  Fain was encouraged to apply for the scholarship by Project GRAD Knoxville College/Career Access Coach Justin Long.  Fain, the second of seven siblings raised by a single mother, began playing basketball as a child to escape the harsh realities of public housing.  Despite the tragic death of her mother two days before her 16th birthday and a torn ACL, Fain was determined to finish strong.  She returned to basketball, was named All-District and All Region MVP and will graduate with honors on May 13.
